Last night I listened to Senator Claire McCaskill, who is basking in the limelight after she called Wall Street "idiots", talk about her dear friend Tom Daschle. Senator McCaskill almost tearfully spoke a tale of woe where the honorable Mr. Daschle made a honest mistake with his taxes, came clean, even though he didn't have to (yes she said this) and it was a tragedy that this great American would not be able to work on fixing our critical issue of health care.
And then she said it. I was praying she would and she did. Senator McCaskill said that Tom Daschle withdrawing his nomination was "patriotic". HAH HAH HAH!!!!! So long Claire! Toss yourself on "the idiot pile"!!!! The man hoovered up $ millions as a secret undercover lobbyist and cheated on his taxes! He voluntarily came forward with his mistake because he HAD too. He knew he had the problem in June 2008! The only thing sadder than Senator McCaskill calling Tom Daschle patriotic is that I KNEW she was going to say it! We may be a den of thieves up here in New York, but down there in Washington it's Sodom and Gomorrah! John Thain, Jimmy Cayne and Dick Fuld would be eaten alive in D.C.!
What is so telling about the culture down there is when you hear Senators talk about Daschle they say things like, "He is the best equipped person to deal with the health care issue because he knows the issues and KNOWS HOW TO NAVIGATE THE COMPLEX GROUPS OF INTEREST HERE TO GET IT DONE." What they are really saying is, "He's an ethically-challenged mutant like us and he is equipped to deal with our way of doing things." There are probably hundreds of folks in this country who understand the issues as well as Daschle, maybe better. They just don't "know how things get done" in Washington. They also haven't spent thirty years in Washington swapping favors and money with all the fine people there. I read "LBJ Master of The Senate" and it's pretty clear how you become "beloved" and powerful in the Senate.....you become "the money man". Seeing how quick Daschle rustled up millions in such a short amount of time (2005-2008) from high powered lobbying firms and the health care industry as well as the fact that Mrs. Daschle is also a powerful lobbyist, I bet Daschle helped a lot of his fellow senators over the years with their campaign finances.
Washington started beating Wall Street like a pinata, which is fine. However, when you call somebody out you usually end up showing yourself in the bright light as well. Unfortunately for us, Washington makes Wall Street look like a bunch of pikers when it comes to sleaze and theft.
