Large Richard From the OLD School

Editor's Note--There's been a lot of commentary from many of you concerned about us not writing more about the financial world. Well when you are  "working men" and you are monitored by such places with acronyms of SEC, NASD, FINRA, etc. it makes it a tad difficult. But we are working on that front, and plan to have it all resolved, soon. Meanwhile, I meant to tell you 8 days ago that, "Richie B's Tea Leaf BUY signal" showed itself on US stocks. Yes 8 days ago. Yes 13% ago in a stock called SSO. Yes I own it as of last Thursday. But that's for another time. It's Friday, and that's Big D time! NFL plays please, oh wise one.--R.B.

Hey, Richie, so it looks like this blog IS the place to go if you like money!! Sounds like a very nice return you got there. Speaking of returns, we've been a little lackluster lately in our NFL return basket. So, what Large Richard likes to do in those instances is go back to basics. Back to the OLD school.

Since the Steelers moved to their new stadium, Heinz Field, a few years back, it's been an OVER wagerer's paradise. Well, the Patriots anywhere, have been an OVER wagerer's paradise. Pats at Steelers. 52 points is the total. Don't try and scare me bookmaker. Lots and LOTS of points in this one baby. OVER.

How about the good old fashioned battle between the COWBOYS and the Eagles? How about under the Sunday Night Lights? How about its gonna be chilly with perhaps a lot of snow plowed on the side of the field? How about Philly aint so good and DALLAS, when they lose, seem to lose close ones? How about DALLAS' defense is starting to kick in? How about DALLAS has covered 10 of 14 in Philly? How about DALLAS is getting 3.5 points? HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYSSSSSSSSSSS?!? Take!

Finally, in the Monday Night matchup, an old AFL battle ensues. San Diego at KANSAS CITY. A lotta hype for the Chargers. People definitely wrote the CHIEFS off after getting blown out 2 times in a row to start the season. Well, don't look now, but KC is 3-3 and if they win this one, they will be 1/2 game behind the Chargers for 1st place! The old handicapper's great angles abound here, too. In the division home underdog. Monday Night Football home underdog. San Diego a bad road favorite (see last week). Take pal. Take!!

So we spread it around with OVER 52 NE/Pitt, DALLAS+3.5 @ Philly, and KC+3.5 vs San Diego. Now give me a little horn section and a little, "California, tumbles into the sea. Large Richard Says NOW Open The Backdoor

Editor's Note--So Large Richard truly found his way in the college football last week. I gather that trip down to "The River" did a lot for his psyche AND, of course, his wallet. A final minute touchdown didnt prevent NEVADA from losing the game, but it did unfortunately, ruin our perfect Saturday in the pointspread game. The only game that matters. But what's the old saying, "2-1 is better than a sharp stick in the eye."? I dont know if that's an old saying, because I just made that up, but here's Big D/Large Richard/aka huge money man!!--R.B.

Yes, Richie, the dreaded "backdoor" got us last week in the NEVADA vs Fresno State game. NEVADA, leading by 13 (and covering the 10 point spread), gave up what the press might call a "meaningless" touchdown in the waning seconds to "win" by only 6. That touchdown was so meaningFUL to us, that it cost a perfect 3-0 day. As the wiseguys like to say, "NEVADA left the "backdoor" open and gave up a late TD that cost their backers cash." When you are backing the favorite, you don't like the dreaded backdoor.

However, when you take the underdogs, you welcome the backdoor. Let's do that this week, ehhh?

Who is Big D, ahem, Large Richard's favorite college team? Why it's the always covering NC STATE WOLFPACK, that's who! Guess who they are playing this week? Why, it's Florida State. Big D's favorite team to go against! Sounds like a matchup made in heaven. Oh and we are getting 19.5 points. Can you tell me who's knocking at the backdoor? TAKE.

NAVY doesn't beat Notre Dame a lot. Well, in the final score. In the pointspread game, the ONLY game that counts, they do it quite often. Notre Dame doesnt cover the spread against ANYONE quite often. Like, 30% of the time, the last 3+ years. Can you please let the dog in at the backdoor? TAAAAAKE!

Finally, Utah had some high hopes this season. Welp, those are out the window. OREGON STATE has always been a great underdog. They get a funny looking 5 points at Utah this Saturday. How did the song go? I wanna be yaw backdoor maaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Hey Ho! Hey HOOOOO!! TAKE!

Large Richard Goes Back To The Promised Land

Editors Note--Workin all day in my daddy's garage, drivin' all night chasin' some mirage. Well, we aint chasin any mirage when it comes to Big D's Picks. Sure he took it on the chin, for once, in the NFL. But, as we said yesterday, he went down to "The River" for his college picks this week. Now for the NFL? To "The Promised Land". If you trust what I say, and even if you dont trust what I say, this will NOT end well for the bookmaker. Now I know these will be some REAL contrarian picks, today. And I cant wait to run, not walk, to the windows and play them. Go get it Large Richard.--R.B.

Well, Richie since we are getting all "Promised Land", why dont I give you and your readers a little advice as to what they can tell their bookmakers? Mister, I ain't a boy. No I'm a man. And I believe in the Promised Land. Here it comes.

Cam Newton is good, aint he? How many games has he won pal? One. And how many has he lost? Five. So now hes a favorite against a VERY MUCH flying under the radar WASHINGTON REDSKIN team? I'll have some of that. Some of that 'SKIN action, baby. Take!

Miami stinks! They cant score! They shouldve been up by 21 points last Monday night. Big D has heard it all. Tim Tebow and the Broncos, come to town and they think half the stadium will be filled in Miami with loyal Tebow fans from his days with the Florida Gators. Do you smell some action? Well, 42.5 points looks a little too fishy, no? Get it? Dolphins? Fishy? Well we'll be on the OVER. How's that for controversy?

Finally, Carson Palmer is back in the NFL. With the raaaaaayyyyyyyydddddduuuuuuuhhhhhhhs. He signed on Tuesday. Guess what? He's starting on Sunday. The line went higher. You think KANSAS CITY will be blitzing a little bit? You think Palmer knows the playbook or the names of his receivers? You think Large Richard would tell you to risk your money on that "stronger" Oakland team? Not a chance pal. Not a chance. 14 out of the last 15 in this series has been covered by the ROAD team. Gimme some RED and WHITE to beat some silver and black. THE CHIEEEEEEFFFFSSSSSS. The ROAD team. Plus the 3.5. PLUS the 3.5.

Large Richard Goes Down to the River

Editor's Note--As a singer/philosopher/political activist once said, (actually he has said/sang this a lot) "No wedding day smiles, no walks down the aisle, no flowers, no wedding dress". That's the kind of gloomy day Big D, ahem, Large Richard, had on Saturday. Only a big WESTERN KENTUCKY victory, made us smile. 1-2 partner. What say you with the college football, my friend? --R.B.

Richie, your knowledge of culture in the 1970s, is impeccable. That being said, I went down to "The River" myself this week. Where I do my best thinking. And I went back to the old chalkboard. And I picked some obscure, but old standby teams, in the college this week. Here goes.

NC STATE is always a fine underdog. They play at Virginia. Now who says Large Richard isn't up on today's popular culture? No one. Well, no one should. And ALL that being said, NCSTATE +5 is the major wager here. Sorry. But, oh congrats, Noel. And Patricia.

NEVADA is tough at home. Fresno is not so good anywhere (except last week, when they beat us). NEVADA WOLF PACK lays 10. Lay it pal.

Finally, one team we dont really talk about lately, but have in the past, is UTEP. Now UTEP plays perhaps the worst spread team in the last 2 years in college football, Colorado State. The MINERS of UTEP lay 7. You know what that means? Lay it pal.

So: NCSTATE+5 @ Uva, NEVADA-10 vs Fresno, UTEP-7 vs colorado state.

Large Richard's Pick 6

Editor's Note--I was walking down the street on Saturday when I saw a huge 6 foot blow up doll of a Florida State football player in front of a saloon that is NOT a sponsor of this blog, yet, so it will go unmentioned. Knowing that Large Richard's first pick of the day was the team playing Florida State, WAKE FOREST! So I ventured inside. And it became a very dark, ominous scene when WAKE FOREST beat Florida State outright while getting 12 points!! Boy was I thrilled. Unfortunately, that was the only thrill of the day as Large Richard dropped his next 2. Then Sunday, we had CINCY again as our first play and winner of the day, followed, shockingly, by two loses. The 1st losing NFL Sunday for Large Richard. I didn't get to talk to him this week. I think he's been studying. And as Coach Morris Buttermaker of Chico's Bail Bonds might say, "That's a whole lotta Bad News for the bookmakers!" Go get 'em Big D....--R.B.

Goodbye, Mr. Silver and Black

 

Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders, has died at the age of 82.

Many had views of this man. Some not too good. Some very good. You youngins, just might know him as some crazy, creepy looking guy, who owned a laughingstock organization. And you might be right in the present tense. But when you pick your head up from your "awesome" Madden 2012 video game, you might want to know that Al Davis was the cat who hired the real life MADDEN, in your Madden 2012, 2011, 2010, etc, video game. Not bad right?

For you "older" timers, you might remember an insanely competitive guy, who got what some might call, the "nastiest dregs of society", to play for his football team. But, you know what? This was FOOTBALL, not the cotillion ball, baby. I'll always remember Otis Sistrunk, #60, on some of those very good 70s Oakland teams, who shaved his head bald, WAY before it was fashionable. They would pan to the sideline every once in a while on the TV, and his head would be smoking. No lie. I also liked when they asked where Otis went to college. He said, "Mars." Awesome, no?

And I have to ask all of you AFC fans who HATED the Rayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-duhs (Davis' beautiful Brooklyn, NY, accented pronunciation, for the Raiders. Timeless and priceless, pal. Yeah thats what Chris Berman on ESPN is mimicking when he says the name of the Silver and Black) , a few questions. Lets go backwards.

Hey Pats fans, you remember how the NFL gave you the game in the "Tuck Game" and changed your franchise for the good, forever? Wll, that was Oakland, from California, battling your asses to the death in a nice New England blizzard. Jet fans? You got beat up a few times by Oakland more recently in the playoffs, but the Jets beat Oakland to advance to their 1 and only Super Bowl, all the way back in the 1968-69 season. The Steelers? HUGE battles in the 70s. HUGE. Immaculate Reception type stuff. Colts followers? Brutal loss in 1977 in OT. Thats when the Colts were in Baltimore. Yep. A few years later they MOVED after never recovering from that loss. Miami fans? Well, well, well. The Rayyyy-duhs stopped a few of your runs.

My point is "A Commitment to Excellence" was not a joke. Not by a longshot. They seemed to always be "in there". Sure, the old man was slippin in recent years. And he was a Grade A assclown. But one of my favorite stories of "Al from Brooklyn", was after they whupped the Vikings in the Super Bowl with John Madden as the coach in 1977, the winning team's bonus share was like $32,000. A nice chunk of change, back then. Al Davis took his money and bought some insane penthouse apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. For not much more than the $32,000 bonus money. You youngsters think this is a lie? How about New York City was BUST in the 70s. And there were plenty of people doing the "OccupyWallStreet" thing back then. Except we called them muggers, or murderers. People were RUNNING out of the city of New York. Quickly.

I do not know if Al, or his heirs, still own the penthouse. But he/they did a few years ago. It was worth $20mm then. So, say the market has even dropped 50%, its still worth a cool 10 mill. His favorite saying? "Just win, baby." Good god, what a great saying.

You can say what you want about him, there wont be another one like him. I wanted say a special thanks to Al for his team losing the 1968 AFL Championship game to the NY Jets. At Shea Stadium. 27-23. About 8 degrees at kickoff. As a VERY young man, I was there. Dont remember, but my folks say it was cold.......The Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-ddddddddddddddddddddddddduuuuuuuhhhsssss.

Large Richard: Hot Tonight and Tomorrow and.....

Editor's Note--Well, we got our college selections from Le Grande Wizard, Big D, Large Richard, Big Kahuna, yesterday. Now he looks to build on his 9-3 NFL record. That's not a misprint folks. 75% in the NFL. Sweet mother of God. If you played $1 on each game, you would be up $9 - $3.3 = $5.7 (when you add in the standard 10% vigorish on the losses). Um, Big D does NOT play just $1. So let's see him continue his steamy H-O-T ways! Goooooooooooo Big D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--R.B.

Well, Richie, it's Friday. Thank god. And we give thanks, because its just closer to the Saturday and Sunday where we sit back and collect the fruits of our labor. And by fruits, I mean bricks of $100 bills. Your bookmaker? How is he, or she, or it? Poorer pal. Poorer. Here come 3 more straight fire, flaming HOT NFL choices. Controversial, of course. But Ben Franklin dont ask how you got him, when he goes into your wallet, do he? No, he do NOT.

Defense? On Houston or Oakland? Sometimes. Offense on Houston or Oakland? Almost always. The bookmaker likes to scare us away with a 48.5 point total, ehhhhhhhhh? We are all quite aware that the Texan's best receiver might be out. They play indoors in Houston, no? Perfect weather conditions equal perfect O-V-E-R, handsome.

Have you learned from Big D's, ahem, Large Richard's, gambling axioms this year and last and the year before, and.....etc.? "Always take the underdog in the BENGALS games." How's that doing so far this year? Uh huh. The Jaguars are weak and they lay a weak 2.5 points. CINCY is the way to go. ORANGE AND BLACK baby!

Finally, on Sunday night, in the big rematch from last year's playoffs, the Packers go down to Hot-lanta for a special game. Special because Hot-lanta wants revenge. Special because the Packers are rolling. Special because the running scared bookmaker has posted an oh so high total of 53.5. Does that scare Large Richard? No, it does not. OVER in the Jaaaaaaaaw-Ja Dome pally! OVER!

So to recap the winning wagers: OVER 48.5 Houston/Oakland, CINCY+2.5 @ Jacksonville, and OVER 53.5 Green Bay/Atlanta. H-O-T indeed. Now enjoy the weekend, the games, and of course, this video below. Everyone bust out their headbands baby! Goooooooooooooooooo!

 

 

Large Richard Captain of the Wagering Ship

Editor's Note--The college football was kind to Big D, ahem, Large Richard, and all of us who followed his sage advice last week. A spiffy 2-1 record that has us all a little more giddy than usual. We aren't protesting that at all. I think we should also start an "Occupy Large Richard's Winners" group, but instead of living in tents down by the river, we sip champagne through a straw, while throwing lobster tails in the air and catching them with our mouths, in some cabana, poolside in Las Vegas. We would probably see Large Richard there, too. Cause that's just an average day in his life. Fire the choices when ready, O Captain, My Captain.--R.B.  

Richie, you are far too kind with your words. We knew we would break out of the college football slumber at some point. It was good that it was sooner than later. We have 3 more underdogs this week which could also all be outright winners, but we'll be glad to take the generous points just in case. Ready? Good.

The 25th anniversary of the Penn State football team championship is this year and they are having a big celebration at homecoming in old State College, PA this weekend. There should be 100,000+ strong, mostly in blue and white, cheering and screaming. Too bad the home team has had played cream puffs so far, and hasnt covered the spread in any one of the first 5 games. They lay a "mysteriously low" 4 points to a VERY tough IOWA squad, who ALWAYS plays Penn State tough. Smells like a field goal game. A field goal is worth 3 pal. Take.

Lotsa people thought Florida State might have a chance to win the national championship, but that dream ended in like game 4. They apparently forgot to tell Mr. Oddsmaker because he has Florida State favored by 12 points to a sneaky good WAKE FOREST team......at WAKE! Too many pal. Too many. Taaaaaaaaake.

Finally, Utah State has been losing close games this year. Really close. So now this week they are favored. And by 11 points! To whom? Why the 10-2, last 12 as an underdog, WYOMING COWBOYS!! That's whom!! Smells like another close game. Take the points, friend. Take the points.

So, tomorrow we will build on our blistering 75% start to the NFL season. On Saturday, to build on our new hot streak in the college: IOWA+4 @ Penn State, WAKE FOREST+12 vs Florida State, WYOMING+11 @ Utah State. 

All this talk of Richie singing a Grand Funk Railroad tune earlier this week in the karaoke, and Captain chatter, got me thinking. Enjoy this classic. That might even be a young Big D in the front row when they pan the crowd, in my bellbottoms and long hair. Good luck and god bless.

 

Bad Time(s)? Maybe

I was at a local tavern, that is NOT a sponsor of this blog, yet, so it will go unnamed, where they serve up all you can eat wings and all you can drink beer during the college football, for a reasonable fee. At around 5:00pm eastern, I got an e-mail from a reader of the blog, saying something to the effect of "Richie, one of your selections in the college football is down by 30, the other is down by 22. Maybe you should tell Large Richard to just stick with the NFL." Well, you may know what happened then......

The team down by 30 was a loser. The team down by 22 at the time, lost by 7, and covered the 13 point spread. And then the night game with WASHINGTON watched them smash Utah by 20 points while GETTING 7!! 2-1. Now, we did lose our baseball game, too. On Sunday, we split when MIAMI came ohhhhhhh so close to the spread. Then last night we had a nice cover with the COLTS for another stellar NFL weekend!!!  So, dear readers, if you think its time to go against Big D, ahem Large Richard, it appears you have ALWAYS picked a Bad Time.

Speaking of, at this tavern I was at Saturday, they have a 15 minute karaoke session during halftime of the late games. My buddy encouraged me to sing something. So I did. I sang "Bad Time" by Grand Funk Railroad. Now that isn't one of their "funkiest" songs, but it is a classic. When I was finished with that song, with a rousing applause I might add, 2 ladies came up to me and told me I should be in a band. I cannot make this up. And I dont think they were deaf or blind.

So I'm looking to join a band now, if anyone has one.

Meanwhile the markets still stink, but perhaps not for long. I'm not telling you to buy or sell, I'm just watching the charts. Again. Which make us money. Again and again. So have a nice day from the boys that make you 1) money in the markets, whether it goes up or down, 2) money in the sports, 3) television programming that is wildly entertaining, and now 4) musical enjoyment for your ears.
