Editor's Note--Well, a speedy, fast start with an outright winner, with a 16 point dog, and an ALMOST outright winner with a 36 point dog (!!), started our Saturday. Then? Not so good. Although a couple more feet on a 2 point conversion would've gotten us the cover in the G-MEN game. Still 1-2 in the NFL. No bueno. 3-3 overall. Let's see if that changes this week with the brooding Big D. I'm gonna go with.....YES--R.B.
Yes Richie, not the best week. Not the worst either, and we may have found some silver, gold, and platinum linings. Away we go.
The MAC (Mid-American Conference) was good to us, yet again. Outright winner EASTERN MICHIGAN getting 16 at Purdue, and THE CARDINALS OF BALL STATE giving Notre Dame every bit to handle as 30+ point dogs, giving us 2 easy victories. Well, we are going back to the well....
BALL STATE faces in-state rival Indiana. Now, of course Indiana being from the "Big 10" (which clearly aint too "Big" this year, thus far), does NOT feel BALL STATE is a rival, and is beneath them from the "lowly" MAC. Well, they better ask Notre Dame if this team isn't for real. Oh? 14.5 point dog? Yeah we takey take, BALL STATE again.
Another MAC team (notice the trend....), KENT STATE, goes to Penn State. Penn State looked a bit shaky 2 weeks ago but throttled Pitt last week to get the alumni jumpin. The GOLDEN FLASHES are 2-0 versus the spread, and a nice scrappy bunch. Now you layer on 35 points? Yep. 35. And that gets us involved, since Penn State starts its all important "Big 10" schedule next week. That means they don't keep the starters in forever. Gooooo MAC! Gooooo KENT STATE!
Finally, in the college, Florida State doesn't look so hot. SYRACUSE at 3-0 does. Lesser 'CUSE teams have given better Seminole teams, fits. Especially in the Carrier Dome. Oh what's that Mr. Bookmaker? You'd like to make Fsu 3 point favorites AT THE ORANGE? Wrong team favored here pal. We go with the home ORANGEMEN and the points.
Now in the NFL.....the COLTS looked good in Mr LUCK'S return to play. Then that other guy fumbled. Solution? Don't give that other guy the ball this game. Sure the 'skins won decidedly in Arizona. But INDY is no Cardinals. Oh and we get 6.5 with INDY? Really? Really?!?
Yes we are aware of what happened to BUFFALO at baltimore. But we are also aware of what happened to the Chargers at the Chargers. They got mashed up good by KC. Yes the rookie ALLEN starts for the BILLS, but he can't be much worse. Besides the old "40+ point blowout" angle is afoot here. You ALWAYS take the team that loses by 40 or more the following week in the NFL. One of the reasons why is that they may be undervalued, and their opponent overvalued. We think Chargers -7.5 qualifies for both. We'll take the hometown huge dogs, please.
Finally, the BROWNS were good to us last week. We'll go out on a limb and predict they go 0-0-16 (just kidding. just seeing if you were still awake). But all kidding aside, what do you think CLEVELAND's record would be against the spread if they went 0-0-16? 16-0-0?!? Probably. The 'aints cost Richie his suicide pool pick in Week 1. And trust us folks, it wasn't even close. Sorry Richie, but that's a baaaad defense for New Orleans. And when you lay 9 points to a team that is fired up, you should have a goooood defense. We are taking the sneaky CLEVELANDERS plus the generous points, handsomes.
So the "start fast, end faster" happy recap: Saturday: BALL STATE+14.5 at Indiana, KENT STATE+35 at penn state, and SYRACUSE+3 vs Florida State. Sunday: INDIANAPOLIS+6.5 at Washington, BUFFALO+7.5 vs Chargers (LA doesn't sound right), and CLEVELAND+9 at New Orleans.
And if you don't think we are going to start fast and end faster? You are foolin yourself. After all, we are angry young men.....Good luck and god bless!
